For those of you (like me) interested in dance related television, you may already know about the show So You Think You Can Dance. Though I must say that I'm incredibly tired of the whole "reality" TV format, this show has some outstanding dancers performing every week. If you can manage to sit through the boring parts, the highlights are worth it.

Anyway, you can catch it at 9:00pm on Wednesday on CTV.

I think the show is great! For the few West Coast Swing folks that might happen by here.....there are two people on the show that you ought to check out. Benji Schwimmer is currently the US Open Showcase champ and is considered to be one of the top West Coast dancers in the world. He is also very multi-talented when it comes to dance and can do all sorts of styles. If you caught his hip-hop routine last week, he kicked ass! Apparently, he and his partner do a cha-cha routine this week and bring down the house.

His showcase partner Heidi is also on the show, and she is an excellent dancer too. I suspect that she is as multi-talented when it comes different styles, but I haven't seen her dance other styles.

I believe (rumour) that Dmitry happens to be Heidi's Latin partner in real life (off the show). So there are three people to watch that have a connection with each other.

Well, Season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance is over, and what a great season it was! I enjoyed the show as much or more than I did last season. I think the quality of dancing was superb, and I was especially happy to see some of the couples dancers (Heidi and, of course, Benji) make it to the top 4.

Personally, the only cuts on the show I was upset about were that Allison and Natalie were cut before Heidi. I think they were both better dancers than Heidi. I don't think I'd ever seen a more expressive dancer than Allison and I was so sad to see her go. At least she made it as far as she did, so that we got to see her dance quite a bit.

As for the top 2, I figured it would be Benji and Travis, and I guessed right. Really, I thought either of them could have won, but in the end I guess the showman was more popular than the true artist (which is usually the case, isn't it?) But there's no doubt in my mind that Benji deserved to win. Bravo to all the dancers who made the show! Can't wait for next season.

Here's my prediction for next season (and beyond): A guy will always win the top prize. Why? Did you seen the shots of the crowd in the studio?! There was probably 99% girls. If that's any indication of the the demographics that watch the show at home, I think the majority vote would always be for a guy. Of course, maybe the guys that watch the show, do so in the privacy of their own homes, without wanting anyone else to know about it! Wink Who knows...

What did you think of this season?

In case you're interested, I've uncovered some links to some clips of Benji doing some killer West Coast Swing. Check these out for some fun:

Maybe we should start a thread for links to good dance videos?

I guess it depends on the definition of "dancer". I don't happen to like the contemporary style of dancing....too much flopping around on the floor, endless spins in some cases (which are technically great, but leave me cold). I thought that Heidi's strength (as mentioned by Nigel) was her obvious partnering talents. She made Travis look half decent in his ballroom routines (though I wasn't particularly impressed....other then maybe the Paso he did....and that dance probably most closely matches his contemporary abilities in terms of acting out a routine)

I thought it was excellent! I was rooting for Benji from the start and was always amused when people seemed to think that he'd be one dimensional, unable to do solo work, unable to do anything outside of his particular dance skill. I thought that he was consistently better outside of his dance skill then any of the other contestants. If you've seen any of his clips from "after" the contest (Regis/Kathy...etc)...he's definitely the best person to win and promote dancing to America.
