I am interested in trying my hand at competition Salsa and will be going to the Alberta Dancesport Workshop and Dance at the VRRI tonight (Friday January 12th) for the partner search evening. When it was originally announced, the first competition this winter was going to be March 3rd, and I have commitments then. Now, I hear from Kelly that the ballroom competition will be that date but that the Salsa one will be either the 10th or 17th. I was planning on waiting until the second round of boot camp after March that was aimed at the June Swing and Salsa event, however, given the date change I will try now. Ideally I would like to compete at both events this Spring.

However, before I get way ahead of myself, I need to find a partner that is interested in doing this that is comfortable with my level of dancing, the amount of time and effort I am willing to put in. Of course this is also just dance, I am married. My wife and #1 dance partner is just not in a position to put in the time and effort that she would want to be able to do this with me at this time.

Ok, I was a little disappointed. Only one lady identified herself as looking for a partner, and she was looking for a Cha-Cha one. There were 5 or more gentlemen who seemed to be looking for competitive partners and most of them, like I, were looking for someone to compete in Salsa with them. One is possibly the newest member of the Calgary Salsa Community, Michael Currie. Ladies, I hate to admit it since he is also looking for a practice and possibly competative partner, but he is a very good dancer, much better than I.

So with Alberta Dancesport's Salsa Competition boot camp starting on January 21st, I am still faced with trying to find a partner. Alberta Dancesport is going to run the partner search again next Friday night. However I am not comfortable that this is enough for me to find a partner after last night so:
  1. I am posting this message here and on two other forum's;
  2. when I go to the Salsa Mecca course tomorrow night I will see whom there might be interested;
  3. I will also poll the ladies in the Level III course I am taking Monday nights at the Studio

What I am not looking for in a partner:
  • any specific body type;
  • any specific age in a partner;
  • specific ability level, I would be willing to dance with someone of lesser or greater abilities than I by a relatively wide margin;
  • someone who needs everything to be absolutely perfect to compete.

What is important to me in a partner:
  • attitude (I have the patience to try something 50 or 100 times, and the temperament that after trying for days or weeks to say: "geez, it just doesn't work lets do something else there" - do you?);
  • the basic chemistry of how we dance together, whether we find 'connection' readily;
  • adventurousness - I want to make stuff up, I want to dance with someone who makes stuff up too.

For those of you who do not know me:
  • Name: Jim Grant;
  • Age: 47 years old;
  • Height and weight:5' 9" (175 cm) 160lbs (75Kg);
  • Salsa experience: 18 months total*;
  • Marital status: Married (this is just about the dancing).

Things happen and I want to have fun dancing, even if I am serious about competing. I will dance to the best of my ability, and then come back and try to do better. I won't agonize over what might have been, or whose fault anything is. On the dance floor I try to accept responsibility for everything that goes wrong (and yes I know at times this can actually be annoying), but that doesn't mean I will dwell on it, I just want to fix what I can and move on.

So if you are interested let me know by private message here (or e-mail which you can find on my website www.nadreck.com where there are also some videos of various class and workshop summaries on "Nadreck's Dance page"), or at the Salsa Mecca class tomorrow, the Monday night classes at the Studio, or the partner search night next Friday if I have still not found a partner. If you haven't danced with me before, or not recently, or just want to kick my tires anyway (and I may feel that is in order as well) I am sure we can work out a time and place to do some dancing between now and the first of the bootcamp classes Sunday January 21st.

* more on salsa experience: I have been dancing for just under 2 years, dancing Salsa for about 6 months less than that, I spend nearly a year taking Kelly and Davidís Level II Salsa course at the Studio and a lot of the salsa courses offered at Alberta Dancesport, I have been through 4 rounds of Kelly's level III Salsa course at the Studio, and expect to be at that level for quite a while longer. I have also taken a variety of Casino Rueda, Shines, and styling classes.
